Another mission accomplished: I crossed the 100 Mile Fitness Challenge finish line in the company of some Wandelgrrls on December 30th, 2009! * whispers * There were two more secret challengers among them… :))
The original hike from Garderen to Putten got canceled because of the bad weather forecast, but 5 of us decided to go on another hike anyway: NS-wandeling Utrechtse Heuvelrug, from Driebergen to Maarn. We made a pitstop in Austerlitz, where we had some hot chocolat! The weather was fine btw; none of the promised rain, snow or ice came in our way. Still, we didn’t make a detour for Austerlitz Pyramide. But we did pass Stoop Pavilion, where I ate my Herfst Hike Bento on my first walk for the fitness challenge ;)
So, the numbers (drum roll): from October 20th – December 31 I walked 107 miles / 172 kilometers!
Better still, I’ll probably update this post later on with a new total because I am going to end this year DANCING. And in the new year? I will join in the new 100 Mile Fitness Challenge! Because I have had fun :))
WISHING EVERYONE A WONDERFUL 2010!
I should have taken my 66th bento on my 13,5 km NS-hike with the Wandelgrrls: Bieslandse Bos, from Delft to Zoetermeer. Why? Because it makes me think of the famous song Route 66! And… MaaikeB brought her first bento ever for lunch! She’s got the most beautiful bento box, a gift all the way from Tokyo. Lucky grrl! :)
Anyway, we took off early (for a Sunday morning) so I didn’t have much time to plan a real lunchbox. That’s why bento #66 only traveled by train from Utrecht to Apeldoorn on Monday ;) And it contained the following…
Upper tier
- Salad of grilled zucchini and bell pepper, lettuce, tomato, spring onion, capers and basil leaves
Lower tier
- Dried cranberries and strawberries
- 1/4 mini quiche made of leftovers: chard, goats cheese (feta) with basil, pine nuts and egg
- Carrots
- Walnut
- Basil and parsley
Yesterday the Wandelgrrls took advantage of the fine weather and walked the NS-wandeling Elsterberg (from Rhenen to Veenendaal-West). We had planned to do just 11 kilometers but when we got to the one and only bus-stop on the route, we really didn’t feel like going home yet! So we decided to go all the way to Veenendaal-West (17,5 km in total). But first we had to take a break…
Luckily we were only a few meters from hostel Stay Okay Elst :) Although it only has a catering facility for guests, the personnel was friendly enough to give our little group a cup of coffee and some peanut cookies :)) Thumbs up for Stay Okay Elst!
And this might be a good time to give some handy information to hikers who do want to stop after 11 km and want to check bus departure times in advance (like we had wanted to but not been able to): the stop is called ‘Eikelkamp’ in Elst. But you should consider that the last part of this hike is really best: very beautiful! We even saw a small deer — unfortunately it was camera shy ;)
So we had a great afternoon. Because of last week’s rain there was one difficult part where we had to manoeuvre our way through some slush. But thankfully none of us got wet feet :) It’s a pity I cleaned my shoes this morning otherwise I could have made a picture of their horrible appearance ;)
